How to clean your bird feeder.

It's important to keep bird feeders clean to help protect NZ birds from the spread of pests and diseases.

If you regularly feed the birds then it's important to keep their feeder clean too. Not only will a clean bird feeder help attract more birds it will also help support NZ birds by protecting them from illness and the spread of pests and diseases.

How often should you clean your bird feeder?

Bird feeders should be given a good clean roughly every two weeks, more often in very wet weather. This will help stop any food debris from building up and going mouldy. Mouldy food can make a bird sick or even kill it. It will also reduce the likely hood of any bird diseases being spread from one visitor to another.

How to clean your bird feeder?

  1. Remove any food debris. A good quality feeder will be easy to clean and shouldn't have any small gaps that food can get caught in.

  2. Make up a mixture of diluted disinfectant, we recommend a 5% disinfectant solution.

  3. Give the bird feeder a good scrub inside and out and rinse it through fully several times with clean water.

  4. Leave it to dry out naturally.

  5. Remember, to always wear gloves when handling bird feeders and wash them outside

Once your bird feeder is nice and clean and dry you can refill it and hang it back up then sit back and watch your wild garden birdlife thrive.
