The story of Kohab

Did you know there is magic in your garden?

It’s a simple joy that you can find, that is likely already there.

Kohab is a business that came about because we slowed down. In March 2020, New Zealand entered a COVID lockdown, our first, and something we’d never experienced. One year on, we are in a very enviable position compared with the rest of the world. However, that short sharp lockdown for us, was what led to Kohab being created.

The long story short is that during this time, when we had more time, and were confined to our homes, we started to notice the magical goings-on in our garden. Director Josie, was part way through a garden renovation in central Auckland, and was actively encouraging birds back in after the disruption. As a busy mum, it had been very easy to miss what was going on outside her window. Like many of us, she didn’t pause often and was therefore missing out.

The seven weeks at home, in restricted family bubbles, was a wake-up to her surroundings and what was going on in the garden. Whilst our lives were being disrupted, our bird friends didn’t pause. They continued on doing their things, making their nests, finding food every day. They were probably wondering why suddenly all these people were around in their realm. Without sounding too naff, watching the birds made her happy. Seeing personalities and watching their interactions was fascinating.

As our lives returned to normal here in New Zealand (unlike the rest of the world) Josie wanted to retain the appreciation of watching these magical happenings. She wanted to take it one step further and actively support and encourage more birds and more biodiversity in her garden. Provide shelter for them and their families for generations to come with birdhouses and ensure that she was offering the birds nutritious high-energy foods that would supplement their natural diets and help them thrive. And so Kohab was born.

When people ask what Kohab is all about, She says “magic”. It’s easy to be a magician with the right tools and tricks that will enable a simple joy every day. We hope that we can help you to see more magic around you.
